The Most Expensive Phrase in Your Organization

I recently suggested a new creative direction for a community’s annual dinner video.

The response was immediate: "We’re going to stick with what we did last year. It’s what we’ve always done."

It’s a phrase that feels like a safety net. It’s comfortable, predictable, and, in the world of mission-driven work, exceptionally expensive.

The Hidden Cost of "Always"

In Jewish education and communal life, our core values are eternal. Yet sometimes, we cling to the comfort of how things have always been done, mistaking routine for reverence. This confusion between the Message and the Medium can make us feel safe while actually risking far more: the gradual fading of our real impact. It is a subtle trap, leaving us at a crossroads: either settle into repeating what feels familiar and watch our vitality dim, or lean into the discomfort of change and open ourselves to something more meaningful ahead.

When we rely on "what we've always done," we aren't actually honoring tradition; we are choosing stagnation. If you use yesterday’s tools to reach today’s families, you are likely missing the very people standing right in front of you.

Why "Fresh Eyes" is a Marketing Necessity

Hiring a strategist isn’t just about getting a new flyer designed. It’s about inviting Fresh Eyes to your table to help you see what you’ve become "blind" to. Consider this: according to a recent study, organizations that seek external perspectives are 30% more likely to identify significant gaps in their outreach strategies than those that rely solely on internal review.

That means the blindness isn't rare, it's natural. When you get used to seeing something, even when it's out of place, it starts to feel like it belongs.

When you choose to move away from the "rerun" and move toward an opportunity to create an experience, you are doing the hard work of translation:

  • From Routine to Impact: Turning a routine event into a moment that is actually felt.

  • From Safe to Effective: Moving past the "safe" choice to the one that actually drives engagement.

  • From Ancient to Accessible: Taking your sacred "Why" and putting it into a visual language the next generation understands.

The Decision: Timeless or Stagnant?

If your strategy is stuck in a loop, your growth will be, too. True stewardship of legacy means not only honoring the past, but also ensuring its vitality for those who come next. To thrive, an organization must be willing to see innovation as an act of responsible caretaking; the kind that preserves the spirit and essence of your mission as it is passed to the next generation. When we trade the comfort of the rerun for the power of a fresh canvas, we keep our message alive and relevant.

Timeless is sacred. Stagnation is a choice.

The irony isn't lost on me.

Often, an organization will hire me specifically for my Fresh Eyes, only to hand me their old glasses the moment we sit down to work. They want the "new result," but they want it to fit perfectly inside the "always done it this way" model.

But you didn't hire me to fit in. You hired me to help you stand out.

If we keep trying to fit a soulful community experience into a routine rerun, we are on the hamster wheel of design and wasting an opportunity to be felt. You hired a strategist because you know the grind is exhausting, and you know the "safety net" is actually a barrier.

So, let’s make a pact: You bring the timeless mission. I’ll bring the fresh canvas.

Let’s stop repeating the past and start architecting the connection. Because when we lead with the un-fakeable heart, we don’t just make a post—we make a moment that matters.

Timeless is sacred. Stagnation is a choice. Let’s brew a perspective that makes them look twice.
