If Your Parents Can’t Say It, Your Marketing Won’t Fix It

Yesterday, I was sitting in a meeting with a school that wanted more inquiries. They were ready to talk marketing. More visibility. More outreach. More ways to get their name in front of families.

Before we got there, I asked them: “Do you want the long short way or the short long way?”

They smiled, a little unsure what I meant. So I explained.

The Short Long Way

The short long way is what most schools default to. You do more. More posts. More campaigns. More emails. More effort to get in front of more people.

And for a little while, it works.

You might see a sudden increase in inquiries. You might feel momentum building. The part that doesn’t get said out loud, that while you can be getting more attention…you still are not getting chosen.

Where the Decision Actually Happens

We believe the decision happens when someone sees a post or clicks on a website, but that’s not where it starts. The reality is, it starts much earlier, and much more quietly.

It starts in conversations.

In carpools. At Shabbos tables. At a community event, when one parent turns to another and asks, “So what’s that school like?”

In that moment, everything depends on what comes next. Not a paragraph. Not a polished explanation. Just an authentic sentence that highlights the reality of what the school means to them.

If your parents can’t answer that clearly, no campaign is going to fix it.

When Marketing Can’t Carry the Weight

At some point in the meeting, they mentioned wanting to create materials to send out to community seders. Posters. Something visible. Something that would reach more people.

It makes sense. It feels like progress. Yet, sitting there, I kept thinking about a different question, not what we are sending out. What are our parents walking in with?

The most powerful “marketing” in that room won’t be a flyer sitting on a table.

It will be a parent, in a natural conversation, explaining what their child is experiencing in a way that feels clear and real.

“My child is learning how to think.”

“My child feels confident speaking up.”

“My child notices things differently now.”

That kind of clarity doesn’t come from a campaign, but from a school being clear enough internally that parents can carry the message without trying.

When Everything Sounds Right, But Nothing Stands Out

Most schools describe themselves in ways that sound good: Community. Values. Academics.

So when a parent is trying to explain your school to someone else, they default to the same language they’ve heard everywhere else, and just as quickly as it was said, the moment passes, and the parent misses the opportunity. It wasn’t clear enough to repeat or emotional enough to cut to the core and touch the soul.

What Pesach Quietly Teaches About Clarity

Here is where the Pesach conversation feels less symbolic and more practical. At the Seder, we begin with a question, "What is different?", as a way of entering the story.

The Seder plate doesn’t blend everything. Each piece is distinct. You notice it. You experience it. That’s what makes it meaningful.

Schools are no different.

When all marketing is targeted to appeal broadly, there’s nothing left that someone can point to and say, “This is what makes them different.”

The Work Most Schools Skip

The schools that grow aren’t just doing more marketing; they’re doing the harder work of getting clear. Clear enough that a parent doesn’t have to search for the words, and the message shows up naturally in conversation. So clear that when someone asks, “Why that school?” the answer comes easily, because it is felt and therefore understood.

Where Growth Actually Starts

If you want more inquiries, you can take the short long way and keep adding more. Or you can step back and ask a different question.

If someone asked your parent, in a casual conversation, what makes your school different?

What would they say? And how quickly would they say it?

When that answer is clear, your message doesn’t stay inside your marketing. It moves. And that’s exactly when things start to change.

Make it matter.
