"Belonging Comes First": Why This Should Shape the Way We Market Jewish Day Schools

We often talk about what students learn in Jewish day schools. The curriculum. The test scores. The success stories.

But we don’t talk enough about something far more foundational: How it feels to grow up in a space where you belong.

Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, z”l, said it best: “We make a mistake when we think religion is only about believing. It’s also about belonging.”

Belonging isn’t just a buzzword—it’s the quiet, consistent reason Jewish education makes such a difference.
Belonging isn’t just a buzzword—it’s the quiet, consistent reason Jewish education makes such a difference.

This one line reframes everything.

Jewish education is not just about knowledge; it’s about identity. It’s about walking into a classroom and knowing this is your story. Your rhythm. Your values. And most important: your people.

Belonging Isn’t a Buzzword

It’s the safety a child feels when their teacher knows their name, and what makes them happy, excited, and even sad or nervous. It’s hearing a story from the parsha and realizing your family shares that same tradition at home. It’s walking down a hallway and seeing Hebrew, mezuzahs, and faces that reflect your world.

These moments may feel small, but they add up to something that Rabbi Sacks described as essential: It’s also about belonging. Belonging is about community, that delicate yet powerful network of relationships where we learn moral literacy – by being there for other people when they need us, knowing that they’ll be there for us when we need them.” (From Optimism to Hope, pp. 21-22)

Jewish day schools create that network every single day.

So Why Aren’t We Leading With This in Our Marketing?

Parents want academic excellence, but they also want to know their child is safe, grounded, and growing into someone who knows who they are.

If we only market programs, events, and admissions stats, we miss the chance to show what truly sets Jewish education apart.

Public education can offer reading and math. Other private schools can promise rigor. But only a Jewish day school says: “Here, your child will belong to something bigger. Something lasting: Jewish.”

What This Means for Your Messaging

When you're telling your school’s story, don’t just talk about what happens in the classroom. Show what happens in the heart.

Use the photos where a child is leaning in close. Use the language that makes your community feel seen.

And bring it back to what Rabbi Sacks taught us: “Education is the single most important thing we do to ensure the Jewish future.”
